#13 | AI in ELT
Hello everyone!
Today we are going to talk about the integration
of AI in language classrooms.
I’m sure you are familiar with AI, as it has
become impossible to ignore. Any kind of industry that you can think of started
to use AI to keep up with today's needs. We see it as a digital assistant that
helps us to prepare our shopping lists, as a tool to recommend more music that
we might like, and as a friend that we can communicate with from time to time. AI
is everywhere, even when you are not aware. So, why don’t we use it for
educational purposes too? Before making students aware of it, we have to educate
them about the ethical use of AI and its possibilities to facilitate language
learning. AI can offer many options to make itself useful in the classroom environment,
such as a feedback generator, a summarizer, a person to practice speaking, etc.
Luckily, I and my friends were able to
experience preparing AI-integrated materials with this task.
Eylül, İlayda, and I prepared our material on
Canva. Our activity starts with matching the pictures and names of the natural
disasters to activate students’ background knowledge about the topic. For the
second activity, we want students to choose one of the disasters and find two
solutions to prevent it or reduce the damage it causes. Then, we wrote the
instructions about how to use MagicSchool AI for students to get information about
the disaster they chose and write the prompt they were given on the “Informational
Texts” tool. After students get the text, they are going to use it in another
tool called “Quiz Me!” to see their comprehension of it. For our last
activity, students are in the shoes of the captain of an emergency team, and
they have to inform their team before they arrive through a text message about
the disaster itself and its causes and effects on the people using the knowledge
they gain through AI-generated texts. This is our material and lesson plan.
Using MagicSchool AI was really fun because
we became aware of the possibilities of the appropriate AI use in the classroom.
As teacher candidates, we should not fall behind the current trends.
See you in the next post!
