#7 | Chatting with AI Malala
Hello everyone, how are you? I hope you are all okay. As you can see in the title, today we are using AI.
To be honest, I wasn’t that interested in the whole AI discourse, as its use that I have seen so far is generally more harmful. I am sure you also witnessed that kind of content. The ones who think they are real artists by just writing prompts make me furious, so I tried to avoid it for a long time. However, with this task, I was able to use Magic School AI, which has many features that can help students and teachers in a really cute format.
Let
me put in order what we have done with my partner Bilge Dilara Doğan.
·
We chose a character on
“Character Chatbot” and it was Malala Yousafzai, an iconic education activist.
·
We asked her questions
about education, gender equality, and her experiences.
·
Then, we summarized this
interview and wrote a report about it.
·
Again, we used Magic
School’s “Student Work Feedback” feature for our report.
·
And finally, we used the
feedback that we got from AI to improve our report.
(You can see every relevant document in here.)
The process was really interesting, as using AI that much is out of my experience. However, when I look at the features, I can see that there are a lot of things that are ready to help with anything. The platform is user-friendly, and I didn’t struggle with anything apart from exploring and trying to make sense of what to do. There are also language-learning-related features. I have tried some of them, such as Vocabulary List Maker, Text Translator, and YouTube Video Summarizer. They were really fast and provided accurate responses; from now on, I’m definitely using them in my language learning.
I believe I can make use of AI in my teaching too. A couple of days ago, I saw a tweet that said, “I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.” I think this one summarizes our issue really well. Even though I believe that we can’t totally rely on AI without a human being’s consciousness to check the important things, it can still be used for trivial things in a classroom. Before glorifying the use of AI in schools, I think there should be at least some teaching about the appropriate use of it. No matter how useful it may seem, students will not benefit from anything unless they do the things they are supposed to do. But still, everyone should take account of their actions and use AI to facilitate their learning.
Take
care <3
