#11 | Flipped Classroom
Hello everyone!!!
Today we are going to talk about “the flipped classroom approach”.
If you are familiar with this one, consider
yourself lucky because this approach is full of benefits. But what is this? Its
main trait is having the opposite lesson process of the traditional classroom.
In traditional classrooms, it is expected that the learning is happening in the
class and homework is done at home. A flipped classroom allows students to
learn the content at home and do the related activities in the school with
their peers.
Now I want you to imagine a language class
where English is learned as a foreign language. Students’ only opportunity to be
exposed to English is in their classroom, and generally, that time is used by
the instructions or the teaching of the elements. Therefore, the remaining time
is very restricted to actually use the language itself.
A flipped classroom lets students be in
charge of their learning, making them more independent language learners. Even
though they have a presentation given by the teacher, they can control many
things, such as the place, time, and techniques. Furthermore, the classroom
dynamic also changes. Teachers can prepare more interactive activities and focus
on the language use of the students.
Sounds perfect, doesn't it? However, this
beneficial approach has some disadvantages too. There can be problems such as
students not completing the given material, technological issues, or prejudices
against it. Still, these can be overcome with appropriate solutions. For
instance, showing students new ways of learning and starting with small parts can
be helpful.
I, Eylül, and İlayda prepared a lesson for a flipped classroom. We wanted to teach a grammar topic and made our presentation in Canva. For our quiz, we made a video on Animaker and added questions on EdPuzzle. Then we added our voices to the recorded video and shared it on YouTube (don’t forget to watch it!). And here is our lesson plan according to the ASSURE Model.
Since we wanted to keep it simple and
effective, our biggest concern was how to teach. To make ourselves
understandable, we used a lot of intonation and repetition. Overall, it was a
perfect experience for learning how to teach.
Take care!!!
